Team One - Vision Report
 

Executive Summary:

This demographic study was performed looking at data for Decatur and Wise County from various sources1. A very linear population growth in both Decatur and Wise County is projected to continue through 2030 at a rate of ˜100 persons per year in Decatur and ˜1,500 persons per year for all of Wise County. In 2007, Decatur has a population of ˜5,750 people and Wise County has a population of ˜63,000 people.

General population trends for Decatur and Wise County show that the percentage of Caucasians will drop at a rate of 3% over the next 10 years and the Hispanics will rise at a rate of 3-4% over the next 10 years. In 2006, Caucasians make up 68% of the population in Decatur and Hispanics make up 29% of the population in Decatur. Blacks remain at a small percentage (less than 2%) of the overall demographics and their percentage appears to be slightly declining in Decatur and Wise County.

Median ages for Decatur and Wise County are 33 and 35.6 years of age respectively.

The majority of the population over the age of 15 is married (˜64% and 68% respectively). Over half of these households have children under the age of 18. In Decatur, the English language is spoken by ˜70% of the population and Spanish is spoken by 21% of the population. In Wise County, the English language is spoken by ˜83% of the population and Spanish is spoken by 9% of the population.

In Decatur, 65% of the housing is owner occupied. In Wise County, 81.5% of the housing is owner occupied.

Sixty percent of the population in Decatur has an education level of a high school diploma or less.

For Decatur, the head of household median yearly income is $40,116 and the median total household income is $48,256. Wise County is higher with $50,017 for the head of household median income and $58,441 for the total household income.  Wise County in 2000 has approximately 50.6% of its population indicating that they have no religious affiliation.

 
Team Two - Mission/Ministry Report
 
  1. Overview of Ministries and Missions of First Baptist Church 

The Ministry and Mission Team was given the responsibility:  of evaluating current ministries by the church through research and survey; of surveying the church for input into the effectiveness of current ministry and the need for new ministries; of evaluating the community needs and recommending the involvement in and start of ministries to the community.

 

  1. Goals and Recommendations for Fellowship 

This team recommends that the Fellowship begin and improve ministry to the following:

    1. Spanish speaking population in Wise County
    2. Singles population in Wise County
    3. College and Career population in Wise County
    4. Provide new space for Youth/Student Ministry
    5. Provide additional Education space for Bible Study/Discipleship

 In addition, the team recommends the following improvements in ministry:

    1. more cross-generational fellowships
    2. off campus church-wide fellowships
    3. fellowships that cross group lines within fellowship
    4. child care resources for all fellowships/ministries

 

  1. Survey Information and Ministry Analysis

 

The Survey reported the greatest strengths and weaknesses of First Baptist Church:

 

            Greatest Strengths:

    1. Pastor and Staff
    2. Good Children’s Ministry
    3. Greeters
    4. Program for all ages
    5. Friendly Atmosphere

 

Weaknesses

    1. MDO as a part of total ministry of church
    2. Communication of Prayer Needs
    3. Not welcoming environment for all economic status
    4. Need to involve more members in all ministries
    5. Unity/Harmony
    6. Irregular attendance in Bible Study
    7. Feeling of judging/social club mentality

  

  1. Proposed Mission Projects and Involvement

 

The Ministry and Missions Team evaluated current ministries and proposed future involvement.  The results can be found in the Addendum Section, Section B, Ministry and Missions Addendum.

 
Team Three - Building/Resources Report
 
  1. Overview of Master Plan and Resources

 

The Building and Resource Team was charged with the responsibility for researching space utilization and future needs, Master Plan and Preparation for the future at 1, 5 and 10 year projections, and to research current trends and available resources for future development of ministry and facility.

 

  1. Goals and Recommendations for Future

 

Goals include the need to maximize space utilization, organize facilities and equipment with new storage facility, update children’s area to be kid oriented and attractive to children and relocate nursery area closer to auditorium, provide dedicated space for youth/student ministry, provide additional education space for adults, improve grounds maintenance for entire property and provide resources for debt retirement and additional facilities.

 

Proposed Recommendations:

 

a.       Perform a thorough space evaluation and develop an attitude of flexibility

b.      Renovate Children’s Area immediately to be bright and kid-oriented

c.       Consider selling of Property Frontage to provide debt relief and new facilities

d.      Develop Master Plan to provide vision for additional facilities

e.       Develop Architectural plan for Student Building

  1. Fund Raising and Analysis of Resources and Debt Reduction

 

Consider selling of frontage property.  If property could be sold for @ $2M, half could be used for debt reduction and half could be used to build student life center.  These funds would be combined with continued “Wings of Faith” efforts to reduce debt and New Youth Center funds to provide future buildings (Student and Adult Ed) constructed debt free.
