History - 150th Anniversary Story

150 Years of Ministry in Wise County
                                              1856 - 2006

"A Fabulous Heritage, A Future Harvest"

FBC Decatur was one of the pioneer organizations in Wise County. Organized in the fall of 1856, it is today, one of the largest churches in the area with a resident membership of 1391 in 2006.

When Wise County was still a territory, the church met in the home of Samuel Perrin, one mile southeast of Decatur. The first church building was a log cabin constructed in 1857 by the Perrins and the Milhollands at the crossing of Boyd and old Decatur highway.

Around 1880, the church relocated to new facilities nearer the center of the city, northwest of the present courthouse square, but was destroyed in a storm in 1903.  Click here to see the boys Sunday School Class of 1909.

FBC voted to move, and therefore purchased land south of the courthouse on 600 S. Trinity Street. During construction on this site, worship services were held in the chapel of Decatur Baptist College. The new church opened in 1904, with renovations and additions made in 1938, 1951, 1955, 1959 and 1979.

In June of 1982, FBC attained their certification of Incorporation.

In 1989, FBC purchased 32.9 acres on Hwy. 51 South and Preskitt Road for future growth, and in 1993, the first building project had begun. In August of 1997, the first worship service was held in what is now the Family Life Center.  2001 documents the dedication service as the church family marched from the FLC to the new sanctuary for its first service.
